Aberdeen FC is the most important club in the northeast of Scotland and one of the most successful in the history of Scottish football outside of the Glasgow duopoly. Founded in 1903 and based in the Granite City on the shores of the North Sea, the Dons experienced their greatest era of glory under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson: between 1980 and 1986, Ferguson built one of the most extraordinary projects in European football of the era in Aberdeen, winning three Scottish Premier Division titles, four Scottish Cups, and—the milestone that places them forever in the history of continental football—the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup, defeating the Real Madrid of the Quinta del Buitre in the Gothenburg final with an extra-time goal from Eric Black. A victory that remains the greatest European achievement in Scottish football outside of Celtic and that catapulted Ferguson's career toward Manchester United. Aberdeen's intense red—the Scarlet—is one of the most recognizable chromatic identities in British football.
