The 2012/13 season was a discreet campaign for Panathinaikos, which finished sixth in the Greek Super League, far from its usual title aspirations. However, the Athenian club boasted a squad of well-known names: the Spaniard Vitolo—before his breakout at Sevilla and with the Spanish national team—forward Toché, veteran full-back Seitaridis back in Greek football, and attackers Fornaroli and Leto, who brought experience and international quality to a team that failed to find the consistency needed to compete for the top spots. Panathinaikos, one of the three giants of Greek football alongside Olympiacos and AEK, was going through a period of financial difficulties at that time which hindered its sporting performance for several years.
