Mareo is one of the most renowned training centers in Spanish football, the youth academy of Real Sporting de Gijón, which has produced professional players such as David Villa, Michu, Nacho Cases, and Quini. Founded with a commitment to excellence in training, the Mareo Football School has been a benchmark for the identification and development of talent in northern Spain for decades. The 1994–1997 period coincides with a transitional phase for Sporting in the elite of Spanish football, alternating between the First and Second Divisions, with Joma serving as the Asturian club's technical supplier during those years.
