Volendam is a fishing village of 22,000 inhabitants north of Amsterdam, on the shores of the IJmeer, with such a distinct cultural identity—traditional costumes, folk music, and a list of well-known artists and athletes disproportionate to its size—that it seems almost implausible that a football club with history in the Eredivisie would emerge from there. And yet, FC Volendam has spent decades alternating between the Dutch first and second divisions with a fiercely loyal fan base and a way of understanding the club as a direct extension of the local community. The motto "#STRIJDENTOTHETLAATSTE"—fight to the end—is a declaration of character for a club accustomed to fighting for survival and getting by on modest resources in a Dutch football landscape dominated by Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord.
