The 2018-2019 season marked the end of an era at Real Madrid. The season ended with the Santiago Bernabéu whistling and Zidane returning to try and rebuild what had been broken.
In the Champions League, they fell in the Round of 16 to Ten Hag's Ajax in one of the most surprising knockout ties in recent years—a 1-4 loss at the Bernabéu in the second leg. In the league, they finished third, twelve points behind champions Barcelona. A year of painful transition for a club accustomed to winning.
